Lionheart - J-Class Regatta, The Solent 2012

This was one of the paintings to come up for auction at Christie's in London on June 5th 2014.

Here we see Lionheart storming to the finish of Thursday’s race of the second J-Class regatta in the summer of 2012.

A steady 15 knot breeze ensured plenty of action, although thick overhead cloud meant very little sun was able to light up this spectacular sight of four J’s in British waters. These conditions remained for the duration until the last two minutes of the race, when the sun finally broke through, creating an amazing sight. The J’s bowling downwind with huge bow-waves and rolling stern washes lit up beautifully with a dramatic, dark and gloomy backdrop, combined with a mass of flotilla boats creating a haze of spray and adding to the atmosphere.

Lionheart took line honours with Velsheda, then Rainbow and Ranger bringing up the rear, with her decision to take the Island shore side of the Solent not working in her favour.

Velsheda won on corrected time with Lionheart being relegated to second with Rainbow and Ranger 3rd and 4th.

This painting is now sold.
