Jamie Medlin - Marine Artist
Jamie Medlin paints in a photographic style, based on detail and accuracy gained from his background in illustration. This, along with an understanding of light and a natural eye, leads to paintings with mood, atmosphere, accuracy and true quality, which enables him to portray scenes and events as they actually were.
Jamie works in oils and watercolours, an attribute which is rare in itself, choosing the qualities and merits of the media to suit the subject matter. Such a style has enabled Jamie to build a name for himself as a talented artist both in Cornwall, where he lives, and on a national and international level with his ever growing list of galleries and outlets.
At first he painted subjects local to Falmouth, such as the working boat fleet and local scenes, but during a trip to the Americas Cup Jubilee Regatta in Cowes in 2001 he realised the beauty of the great classic yachts.
The paintings he produced created interest from several galleries, including the Royal Exchange in London and Kendall's in Cowes and this in turn, has led to interest from Christies in London and a successful first auction in October 2006, selling all artworks submitted.
Jamie was requested to submit works to Christies for their inaugural sale of ‘Important Maritime Paintings’ which will took place at King St., St. James’s in October of last year. The auction included artworks by the most notable names in Maritime art, past and present, including work by Montague Dawson, Buttersworth, Somerscales, Luny and many, many more. Christies have said about Jamie “Jamie is one of the most compelling young artists in the contemporary Maritime arena”. The auction was a complete success with his painting 'Cambria and Lulworth' fetching a record amount for one of his artworks.
“The invitation from Christies was an absolute honour. It is a privilege for me to be regarded in such esteemed company. I’m absolutely delighted to be showing alongside the calibre of artists that will be represented in the auction. It is, without doubt, the highlight of my career".
The heightened awareness of Jamie’s work has led to interest from overseas including a new gallery in Holland, and some very high profile commissions. These include three more of ‘Lulworth’, for owner Johan van den Bruele and two paintings of the worlds largest privately owned clipper ship — ’The Maltese Falcon’, for venture capitalist Tom Perkins. This recent surge along with an already busy schedule has seen Jamie’s waiting list grow to three years.
Due to the unprcedented demand for Jamie's work there are currently no original paintings for sale anywhere. Christies have already requested Jamie to submit artworks for this years auction and that will be next time an original artwork becomes available for sale. The auction will be held at Christies on 29th October 2008. For information on this auction, please click on the following link www.christies.com . In addition to this, Jamie has now been asked to submit works for their New York auction -'The Golden Age of Yachting' in July of next year.
Jamie is now following the great classic yachts around the globe to create artwork that he feels does justice to these beautiful craft and the glorious sight that they make under full sail.
Keep an eye on this site for new paintings as they are completed...
